The digits of an approximation that carry reliable information about the exact value.
Definition
They count how many digits of reliably agree with those of , measured through the relative error. Each significant figure gained roughly corresponds to dividing the relative error by ten.
How it is used
Cancellation when subtracting nearby numbers destroys significant figures at once: reformulating the expression usually recovers them.
